Investing in a standing desk can significantly improve your posture, energy levels, and overall health. However, not all desks are created equal. When selecting a sit-to-stand desk, the most critical factor is the height range. The desk must be able to go low enough for ergonomic typing while seated, and high enough so you don't have to hunch while standing.
Ensure you check the BIFMA ergonomic guidelines for your height. Most standard desks only lower to about 28 inches, which is actually too high for anyone under 5'10" to type comfortably without a keyboard tray. Look for desks with three-stage columns, which generally offer a broader range (often dropping to 22.5 inches).
A common issue with cheaper standing desks is "wobble," particularly at higher elevations. This can be highly distracting, especially if you use multiple monitors on monitor arms.
If you are taller than 6'0", prioritize desks known for exceptional stability, such as the Uplift V2 Commercial or Deskhaus Apex, as wobble increases exponentially the higher the desk is raised.
A simple up/down switch requires you to hold the button and manually find your perfect height every time. A programmable keypad allows you to save your seated and standing heights (usually 4 presets), ensuring perfect ergonomics with a single touch.
Dual-motor desks are the industry standard for anything above $400. They provide smoother, quieter, and faster adjustments than single-motor desks. Ensure the lifting capacity far exceeds the weight of your gear. If you have a heavy hardwood top, multiple monitors, and a heavy PC case mounted under the desk, you should aim for a capacity of 300 lbs or more.
